The Third Eye chakra: your own centre of intuition and enlightenment.
Your Third Eye is found at the centre of the brow, between your eyebrows and above your nose. It is the energy centre of the body, responsible for reality, perception, manifestation, thought and intuition. Once the Third Eye chakra is in harmony with the rest of the chakras, yogic philosophy states that a doorway towards spiritual enlightenment is opened.
When balanced, the Third Eye chakra allows us to see with clarity and intuition, but when it's blocked or imbalanced, we struggle with problems such as closed-mindedness, anxiety, depression and paranoia.
The Third Eye chakra is associated with the pineal gland in charge of regulating biorhythms, including sleep and wake time. It’s a gland located in the brain that is a centre of attention because of its relationship with the perception and effect of light and altered or “mystical” states of consciousness. It is positioned close to the optical nerves, and as such, sensitive to visual stimulations and changes in lighting.
To help open the Third Eye, exercises such as going outside, eating purple veggies and fruits, star and moon-gazing and working into mindfulness exercises into your routine will allow you to slowly work on balancing any imbalances you may have.
Most people have some kind of imbalance in the Third Eye – almost everyone I know has some symptoms of this – myself included! Yoga asanas that can help open the Third Eye chakra are those that allow you to go within – keeping your eyes closed and your chin in – for example balasana, janu sirsanasa or forearm stand / dolphin pose.
