As someone who resonates firmly and constantly with the dosha pitta, I am very aware of my third chakra – the solar plexus. There is a flame that burns within each and every one of us. It makes the experiences that we have, the boundaries that we set and the way that we interact with ourselves and others.
Sometimes this heat is warm and nourishing: you are content, happy, joyful. But sometimes, the fire is hot: you're angry, intense and irrational. These two varieties of the fire represent the power of the fire that is within us – it is powerful, but not meant to dominate or destroy.
When this chakra is balanced, you feel nourished and sustained – you are empowered, capable, confident. When you feel this way, make an effort to notice in your body where you feel it, and use this in bouts of future negativity. This will empower you to take responsibility for your actions – something that can be incredibly difficult to do in tiresome times.
When the solar plexus is out of balance, you know you need rest – you are beginning to see yourself as a victim, rather than empowered to make good, strong decisions. For me, this is where I feel the negative effects of this – I will overreact to tiny mishaps and everything seems difficult.
The best ways – for me at least – to balance the solar plexus chakra are twisting and laughing. Who doesn't love both of these?! Taking a balancing, fun, flowing class with a friend is the best way to relieve stress on the solar plexus – the sense of relief from both the laughter and the movement can work magic.
Foods to eat that balance the third chakra include all orange foods – oranges, squash, turmeric (I made some delicious turmeric energy-fat balls this weekend which I'll share in another post), tropical fruits, and of course water. Processed white sugar tends to be a toxin for the third chakra. If your third chakra needs balancing, it’s a good idea to avoid processed white sugar.
I hope this is the start of a great week for everyone – I have a crazy week coming up, so I'm taking today to chill, prepare and get my head straight. Happy Superbowl day (Go Eagles).
